You don't have to be in shape to start

It's the thing we hear most from people who haven't tried a class yet. The second is a worry about getting hurt. Here's how both get handled on the mat.

  • Fitness is what training builds

Tuesday Fundamentals is built for first-timers. You learn positions and escapes at a pace you set, and water breaks are yours to take whenever you need them.

  • You can stop anything, instantly

A tap ends every hold. Training partners are there to help you learn, not to win, and a coach is watching the room the whole time.

  • Every age and size trains here

Teenagers, parents, grandparents, first responders. One member called it a wonderful mix of young and older grapplers with great attitudes.

Your first week at
Delta Grappling Academy

Seven days, every class on the schedule, no charge!

  1. Pick a class

Choose anything on the schedule and book it online, or call (740) 504-1367.

  2. Show up ten minutes early

That's time to fill out a quick waiver and, for gi classes, get fitted for a loaner gi. Wear an athletic shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets.

  3. Learn the basics

A coach gets you moving. Most people train barefoot; wrestling or boxing shoes work if you'd rather.

  4. Try everything

Gi, no-gi, kickboxing and Muay Thai. Take as many classes as you want and see what fits before you decide on a membership.

A lineage you can trace

Head instructor Greg Schaffer earned his black belt in 2023 from Professor Robin Gieseler, an 8th-degree coral belt and one of Relson Gracie's first ten black belts. Every class at Delta connects back to the Gracie family.

Part of something bigger

Delta shares its mats with people who serve, and with the fight team from across town.

  • The Legion Project

Thursday's 6:30 PM no-gi class is free for veterans, active-duty military, police, fire, EMS and other first responders, members or not.

    How the free class works
  • We Defy Foundation

Delta is a We Defy training center. The foundation sponsors combat veterans for a year of jiu-jitsu to help with PTSD and the effects of service.

    Veteran sponsorships
  • VO2 Fitness Fight Team

The VO2 Fitness Fight Team runs its boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai training here, and VO2 Fitness members train at a discount.

Questions before your first class

Still wondering about something? Text (740) 504-1367 and a coach will answer.

How does the free week work?

You get seven days of unlimited classes at no cost. Try any class on the schedule, as many as you like, including gi, no-gi, kickboxing and Muay Thai. Book a class online or call (740) 504-1367, and arrive ten minutes early for your first one to fill out a waiver and get fitted for a loaner gi.

Do I need experience or to be in shape?

No. Most people start with no experience at all, and fitness comes from training rather than before it. Tuesday BJJ Fundamentals is the easiest place for a new adult to begin.

What should I wear to my first class?

A rash guard or athletic shirt and shorts without pockets, plus sandals and a water bottle. You'll train barefoot or in wrestling or boxing shoes. Loaner gis are available for gi classes.

How much does a membership cost?

Pricing depends on the program and who in your family is training, so we go over options in person during your free week. If you'd like to talk it through first, call or text (740) 504-1367.

What age can kids start jiu-jitsu?

Kids Jiu-Jitsu is for ages 5 to 13 and meets Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 PM. Teens 13 and up who are ready can join adult classes, and Saturday's 11:00 AM class is open to all ages, so parents and kids can train together.

Is there a women's class?

There isn't a separate women's class. Women train in every class at Delta, and purple belt Michelle Williams is one of our coaches.

Is the Thursday class really free for veterans and first responders?

Yes. Through the Legion Project, the Thursday 6:30 PM no-gi class is free for veterans, active-duty military, police, fire, EMS and other first responders, including park and resource officers, whether or not you're a member. Bring proof of service, like a military, veteran or department ID.

What's the difference between gi and no-gi?

In gi classes you wear the traditional jacket and pants, and grips on the fabric are part of the game. No-gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, so it's faster and relies more on grips on the body. Both teach the same core jiu-jitsu, and you can try both during your free week.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Every instructor at Delta teaches private lessons. Visit an instructor's page to see how to book with them.
